Admission Requirements:

Master’s Degree Program Basic Requirements

The School of Industrial Engineering offers both “applications track” (without thesis) and “research track” (with thesis) master’s degrees. The applications track is for students whose intent is to complete the degree and go into industry. The research track is for students who are considering pursuing, or who have decided to pursue, a career in research and/or a Ph.D.

All master’s program applicants are reviewed by the faculty in at least one of our areas, as specified on your application. For this reason, please specify your primary area of interest on the on-line application; it does not commit you to that area exclusively but assists in our review of your application. Research-track students must, in addition, be at least tentatively matched to a faculty member who has agreed to serve as major professor and advisor. We therefore admit a smaller percentage of research-track students than applications track students. However, research students may be eligible for funding, depending on availability of funding from the matched faculty member.

For M.S. students, it is important for you to carefully consider and clearly specify whether you wish to be considered an application or research track student. As noted, research track students have to be matched with faculty, making it more difficult to be recommended for admission, but may be able to receive funding. Not specifying for which track you wish to be considered may result in your application being denied. There is a question in the online application for this purpose, so please pay close attention to it and ensure it matches your intention and is not left blank.

Doctoral Degree Program Basic Requirements

It is recommended, but not required, that students have a master’s degree before entering the Ph.D. program. The procedures for review of Ph.D. students are the same as for research track M.S. students, which are indicated above. Ph.D. students must be at least tentatively matched with a faculty member who has agreed to serve as major professor and advisor. It is therefore recommended that you contact individual faculty members whose interests align with your own prior to applying to the Ph.D. program.
