Academic Programs:

Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy Programs:

Nutrition Science at Purdue University has an excellent national and international reputation. We offer programs leading to the Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. These research-focused programs that combine course work with mentored research projects. The MS degree requires completion of a thesis and the PhD degree requires completion of a dissertation. All students interested in a graduate degree in Nutrition Science enter Purdue University through the Interdepartmental Nutrition Program (INP). This is an umbrella program that coordinates nutrition-related training and research activities at Purdue University. The average length of time to attain a MS degree is 2.4 years while the average time to a PhD degree is 4.7 years.

Concentration (Areas of Study):

Students entering the graduate nutrition programs can focus their training by concentrating in one of several areas:

  • Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition where the focus is on examining mechanisms controlling nutrient metabolism or defining diet-disease relationships using the disciplines of biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, genetics, and physiology.
  • Animal Health, Growth and Development where the focus is on promoting growth and development of production animals in studies that depend upon the sciences of physiology and biochemistry.
  • Human and Clinical Nutrition where research is done in human populations to translate basic research findings into clinical practice.
  • Public Health and Education where nutrition issues are examined in populations or where studies are done to influence the nutrition knowledge of the general public.

In addition to the concentration areas listed above, students can also combined their nutrition training with a dual degree in Gerontology or in the multidisciplinary focus area of Ingestive Behavior.
