Environmental and Sustainability Studies Certificate


About the Program

This interdisciplinary program will appeal to students interested in studying environmental and sustainability problems from a wide range of perspectives. The certificate will give students working in multiple disciplines a broad exposure to how environmental and sustainability challenges and solutions are conceived, represented, and researched in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Agriculture, and STEM disciplines. The program will introduce students to a wide range of environmental issues from diverse perspectives so that they may more thoroughly comprehend and critically evaluate today’s environmental and sustainability challenges.

Requirements for the Certificate (15 credits)


2. Environmental & Sustainability Selectives (9 credits)


Choose one from each category:

  1. Social, Cultural, Economic, and Political Dimensions (3 credits)
  2. Stewardship, Conservation, and Management Dimensions (3 credits)
  3. Science, Engineering, and Technological Dimensions (3 credits)

3. Interdisciplinary Capstone Project (3 credits)


  • The capstone project offers an opportunity to develop an extended interdisciplinary analysis of a significant sustainability or environmental problem. Individual project advisors will specify the precise requirements for the project.
  • To complete this requirement, students must enroll in a 3 Credit independent research project or directed reading class that will be designated by the faculty advisor and student to apply to the CESS capstone requirement, with approval by the CESS faculty committee. To initiate this process, contact the Department of Political Science for necessary forms.
  • This requirement to be met with the title “Capstone Exp Env & Sustain Study”.
