OBHR 33500 - Strategic Business Writing (UCC: WC) Credit Hours: 3.00. This course is designed to help Daniels School of Business undergraduate students become more effective, strategic writers in a business setting. However, there will be opportunities in this class to develop and practice speaking and interaction skills as well. The course format involves class lectures/discussions and extensive written work. Learning Outcomes 1. Recognize key communication principles of Audience Analysis, Emotional Intelligence, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Building Connection and Trust, and Communication Ethics: Identify an audience and what matters to them; Identify your own emotions when communicating and empathize with others; Recognize when you need to think critically, and problem solve based on the larger situation and context; Apply strategies for how to build connection and trust with an audience; Identify best practices for ethical communication. 2. Employ AI tools ethically and effectively to enhance the quality and impact of written content, while respecting privacy and intellectual property rights: Identify best practices for using AI in business writing; Recognize drawbacks and problems with using AI in business writing. 3. Attain proficiency in producing a range of standard business writing formats, demonstrating versatility and competence in professional communication through exercises and assessments: Identify different types of business writing and when to use them; Recall the key components and formatting requirements to demonstrate a foundational understanding of diverse business writing formats; Find common errors and best practices in business writing through self-assessment and peer feedback, fostering an awareness of areas for improvement and enhancing overall proficiency in professional communication.
