SCLA 51000 - Data And AI Storytelling

Credit Hours: 3.00.  The primary assumption of our course is that the goal of communicating with data is ultimately to identify causal mechanisms and change the status quo due to the obtained insights. All audiences have previous understandings of the world, and meaningful data stories should challenge their assumptions about that world. The communication of this data-based new knowledge violates prior assumptions, shares memorable new information and moves the audience to act based on the new knowledge. This is best accomplished through a story. In other words, this communication assumes the form of a story, which is defined as the narrative of how an unexpected cause creates an effect.
Learning Outcomes
1. Provide high-quality data story examples and justify why they meet the good story criteria. 2. Identify and extrapolate core relationships between research design and story-building. 3. Generate hypotheses based on data. 4. Create specific data visualizations which maintain casual narratives. 5. Identify story elements that map onto the five tenets of What is a Data Story? 6. Identify in examples the adherence or violation of data transparency, validity and ethics.
