ECON 51600 - Introduction To Mathematics For Economics

Credit Hours: 2.00.  This is a Master’s level course in mathematics and its application to economics. Students in this class will review and practice the mathematical methods required to solve micro and macroeconomic theoretical models, especially contrained optimization problems. The content covers a review of algebra, univariate and multivariate calculus, and constrained optimization methods, e.g., LaGrange multipliers. Mastering these methods is instrumental to preparing for ECON 51100 & 51200 (micro and macro theory).
Learning Outcomes
1. Solve problems requiring algebra and (uni-) multivariate calculus. 2. Apply algebra and calculus to solving (un)constrained optimization problems required by economic theoretical models. 3. Analyze assumptions embedded in economic theoretical models, e.g., functional forms and parameter values, using algebra and calculus.
