STRT 53800 - Consulting Skills And Tools

Credit Hours: 2.00.  This course is designed to accomplish two different levels of skill development for students. At the most basic level, the course will give the students insight in the consulting industry and many of the challenges they may face. This will give them exposure to what it means to be a consultant in most industries so the student can assess fit with career goals. Additionally, it will give the student a view into dealing with clients and the challenges associated with client management. The second overall goal is to integrate material taught in functional disciplines. This gives the students awareness and experience with the process associated with consulting and analytical thinking. The majority of the time is spent with these tools as these are not covered in other courses and are critical to solving complex problems. This is separate from the tools, such as Porter’s five forces or net present value, which are taught in other classes. This course is aimed at the most crucial of the consulting skills which is how to set up problems with testable hypothesis, how to gather information, and how to “sell” solutions to management. These base layer skills can be applied to most problems within management, whether the role is labeled consulting of simply if the student is in a general management position. There is a method and process which, if followed, will assist people in being able to come to better conclusions, with less effort, more conviction, and with a reduced chance of being wrong.
