ECON 56900 - Economics For Business Credit Hours: 2.00. This course examines economics from a business perspective and provides a clear analytical framework for understanding the forces that shape key economic variables such as national income, employment and unemployment, interest rates, inflation, and exchange rates. Students will explore essential macroeconomic concepts by emphasizing how economic theory connects to real-world data. Topics include measuring aggregate economic activity, understanding the origins and features of recessions, and evaluating how government fiscal and monetary policies promote stable growth and price stability. The course also examines the causes and consequences of unemployment and introduces the economic forces and policy decisions that influence exchange rates and international trade. Learning Outcomes 1. Analyze the macroeconomy using key aggregate measures and evaluate what they reveal about overall economic performance.
2. Assess different measures and theories of unemployment and judge their implications for labor markets and business decision-making.
3. Explain and evaluate the causes, consequences, and policy challenges of inflation.
4. Analyze the origins, characteristics, and dynamics of business cycles, including recessions, booms, and financial crises.
5. Debate the effectiveness of monetary and fiscal policy tools in stabilizing the economy across different scenarios and historical episodes.
6. Assess the function of money, the role of banking systems, and the behavior of financial markets in influencing macroeconomic outcomes.
7. Evaluate how exchange rates are determined and assess the effects of macroeconomic shocks and policies on a country’s financial and current accounts.
