CS 47700 - Natural Language Processing

Credit Hours: 3.00.  This course will give a comprehensive overview of the key concepts in natural language processing (NLP) and the techniques used for statistical modeling of natural language data. We will introduce and discuss several NLP tasks, such as sentiment analysis, information extraction, language modeling, syntactic parsing and semantic analysis. The course will be divided into three modules: (1) key statistical machine learning methods in NLP, (2) computational linguistic tasks and modeling approaches, and (3) generative AI including large language models (LLMs).
Learning Outcomes
1. Describe and analyze the key challenges in dealing with natural language data and other fundamental areas of NLP.
2. Analyze and implement the key algorithms and techniques used in NLP.
3. Identify algorithmic techniques that can be applied to new problems and evaluate other possible solutions.
4. Conduct experiments using proper methodology for training and testing NLP systems using data.
5. Understand the ethical and safety considerations of modern NLP methods.
