Political Science Minor

About the Minor


A Minor in Political Science exposes students to foundational ideas about how governments work and why they make the choices they do. Students may complete coursework in one or more fields including American politics, comparative and international politics, international security, law, public policy, foreign policy, and research methods. A minor in political science prepares students to work in fields that are connected to or impacted by government decision making.

Requirements for Minor (15 credits)


Political Science courses


  • POL 10000-19999 (any course) - Credit Hours: 3.00
  • POL 20000-59999 (any course) - Credit Hours: 12.00

Notes


  • A total of six (6) hours of POL 40300, POL 49500, and POL 59000 may be applied to the minor.
  • No more than three (3) hours of POL 40300 or POL 59000 from internship programs.
  • 50% of credits for CLA minors must come from Purdue University.
  • Political Science Minors must earn a “C-” or better. The P/NP option is not available to complete this minor.

College of Liberal Arts Pass/No Pass Option Policy


  • P/NP cannot be used to satisfy Liberal Arts Core, Liberal Arts major, minor, or certificate requirements.

Program Learning Outcomes


Students will:

  • Explain the role of institutions of government in shaping social, economic, and political outcomes.
  • Identify groups and interests in society to understand how they pursue their goals through the use of political processes.
  • Assess the factors that shape for the political attitudes and behavior of the public and political leaders.
  • Compare and contrast why different forms of government arrive at different solutions to pressing problems in society.
