About the Program


The Department of Mathematic’s graduate program is one of the largest in the country - and one of the best. The Department offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy. There are several programs leading to the Master of Science degree, some of which prepare the student to seek nonacademic employment, others prepare the students to continue to the Ph.D. degree. The master’s degree program requires 30 hours of coursework.

30 Credits Required

Specialty Tracks (18-21 credits)


Students should choose one of three mathematics tracks, depending upon their academic interests, listed below. The tracks include Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics #1 (for those seeking a PhD after the MS), and Applied Mathematics #2 (for those not seeking a PhD after the MS).

Other combinations of courses are possible, and substitutions in course requirements and the transfer of credits from other universities may be permitted with the permission of the Graduate Committee.

Pure Mathematics Track (21 credits)


Students taking the pure mathematics track should take the following courses.

Applied Mathematics Track #1 (18 credits)


This applied mathematics track is for students seeking to continue toward a PhD after the MS degree.

Applied Mathematics Track #2 (18 credits)


This applied mathematics track is for students NOT seeking to continue toward a PhD after the MS degree. In addition to the courses below, students should provide depth to their degree by taking at least two of the remaining four courses from a specific area in the selecitves lists.

Selectives (6-12 credits)

Choose two to four courses from one selectives area listed below.

GPA Requirements


Students are expected to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 as Master’s candidates and at least a 3.25 as Ph.D. candidates. The completion of an approved plan of study, with all grades of A or B with the possible exception of at most two grades of C, and a grade point average of at least 3.00 is required for the M.S. degree.
