Additional Information

Clinical Education and Placement Opportunities: In the student’s first year in the program, clinical education opportunities will be provided in a variety of settings at Purdue University and in the surrounding community. These experiences will be set with specific patient groups and populations to ensure the students receive a well-rounded experience in the profession and gain both confidence and competence in difference athletic training settings. Students can expect to be placed in different rotations on campus with our Purdue Athletics teams, in on-campus rehabilitation clinic, or with one or more physicians. Additionally, students will spend time at a local high school, a local Division III small college, in a tactical athlete clinic, and/or with one of the program’s physician partners in the community. Since some student experiences will be off-campus there will be a need for students to have reliable transportation options. Some of the program’s clinical sites are on the local bus lines, but not all.

In the summer, students will have a variety of general medical rotations to learn how to care for patients with non-orthopedic conditions. These will occur off campus in the local West Lafayette/Lafayette area.

In the students’ final year, they can expect full or near full immersion into 1-2 different settings. Since students will have completed all required experiences over the summer and in year one, they will have some choice in what their second year will look like. Classes will be offered in a synchronous and asynchronous online format which now allows students to immerse in their clinical education applying everything they’ve learned up to this point. This format also allows students to perform clinical experiences anywhere in the country. Of course, if students want to stay at Purdue or in the local community, they can. But students can also tap into the program’s alumni network to place them in a wide variety of settings across the nation. Please note: students may incur additional housing and transportation costs if they pursue clinical education opportunities in locations outside the local West Lafayette/Lafayette area.

GPA Requirements

Students admitted to the professional phase of the Athletic Training Program will be allowed to enroll in the coursework and clinical experience. The academic record of the students in the program will be evaluated each semester. The student must receive a 2.75 GPA or better for the semester in order to remain in good standing. If the student’s semester GPA is below 2.75, the student is placed on “probation” for the following semester. Two successive semesters below a 2.75 will call for the “suspension” of the student from the program.
