World Food Cultures Certificate

About this Certificate


The World Food Cultures Certificate provides students with an understanding of the central role of food in the human experience. The goal of the certificate is to offer students a variety of perspectives on food that will include topics including but not limited to, national identities, nutrition, environmental impact, health, and other humanistic and scientific approaches to the field of food studies. This certificate addresses the need to prepare students in areas such as Agriculture, Health, Business, Science, and Engineering, among others, to be globally competent and culturally aware citizens and professionals.  

Requirements for the Certificate (15 credits)


Required Course (3 credits)


This course introduces students to global food culture and world gastronomy. It covers different aspects of food studies such as food representations in art and literature, national identity, culinary traditions, and world trade and migration in respect to food. This course will give students a broad overview of the relation between food and many other disciplines, allowing them to connect the topics addressed to their own fields of study. Conducted in English. No prerequisites. 

Selective - Choose Two to Three Courses (6-9 credits)


Learning Outcomes


  • Analyze food topics from diverse perspectives and disciplines to develop a comprehensive understanding of food’s significance across various aspects of human life.   
  • Discuss and debate food issues within the context of their own discipline and career path. 
  • Describe and reflect on the cultural and historical significance of food in various countries, comparing them with the United States.  
  • Analyze and evaluate literary works, films, and other texts related to food within their historical and geographical contexts.  
  • Evaluate and assess the roles of earth conservation, human labor, and sustainability in both the production and consumption of food.
