About the Program


Purdue University’s Online Master’s in Economics program offers career-compatible flexibility for busy professionals over the course of 2-3 years. Designed for individuals who have an interest in learning the tools to analyze and interpret economic data, students will be able to apply those results to decision making in business and public policy environments. Students will have the option to specialize in three unique areas that offer the opportunity to expand applied or theoretical understanding of economics.

The specialization options are:

  • Business and Economics Data Analytics
  • Financial Economics
  • Public Economics and Policy

Each of these is also offered as a post-baccalaureate certificate, which students may earn to fulfill the requirement: Business and Economics Data Analytics, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Financial Economics, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Public Economics and Policy, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate .

Required Courses (9 credits)


Choose courses to total 9 credits.

Specialty Areas (12 credits)


Students should take 6 credits in a primary specialty area and 6 credits in a secondary specialty area, listed below.

Specialty Electives (0-6 credits)


Choose courses to fulfill remaining credit requirements. In addition to the courses below, students may choose electives from any MGMT, ECON, or OBHR courses that have not fulfilled other requirements.

General Electives (32 credits)


Students must take the following courses in order to fulfill their degree requirements:

  • 16 credit hours in economic theory
  • 10 credit hours in econometrics
  • 6 credit hours in research methodology
