About the Program
The Department of Mathematic’s graduate program is one of the largest in the country - and one of the best. The Department offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy. There are several programs leading to the Master of Science degree, some of which prepare the student to seek nonacademic employment, others prepare the students to continue to the Ph.D. degree. Program Website Program Requirements

At least a total of 42 hours of Purdue graduate course work with at least half of them in courses offered or co-listed by the Mathematics Department. Core Courses (12 credits)
Students must pass two qualifying exams, one in Algebra and one in Analysis, among the four core areas, listed below. Students can avoid taking any of the four core courses by passing the qualifying exam in the subject. Once passing the qualifying exams, students are eligible to take the Advanced Topics Examination, which covers courses listed under Selectives. Selectives (6 credits)

Students should take at least three courses (9 credits) at an advanced level in the field of specialty or closely related to it. Reading courses and seminars may be included. Dissertation Research (48 credits)
A thesis must be submitted in final form presenting new results of sufficient importance to merit publication. Concentrations
Interdisciplinary concentrations: GPA Requirements
Students are expected to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 as Master’s candidates and at least a 3.25 as Ph.D. candidates. The completion of an approved plan of study, with all grades of A or B with the possible exception of at most two grades of C, and a grade point average of at least 3.00 is required for the M.S. degree. Graduate Programs Disclaimer
- The student is ultimately responsible for knowing and completing all degree requirements. Students should consult with their advisor/department for more information.
- Not all graduate programs may be actively recruiting students and course modality availability may vary.
- Please refer to the Explore Graduate Programs website for a list of currently available graduate programs.
