About the Program


The MFA in Costume Design at Purdue University’s Department of Theatre emphasizes aesthetic experimentation and collaboration, as well as the establishment of strong research and communication practices. An effective designer is one who brings nuanced, well-supported ideas to every table and communicates well with design, technical, and performance colleagues.

Tutorial Internship (6 credits)


Students must register for THTR 669 for a Tutorial Internship in the Fall of their 3rd year.

Terminal Project Course (6 credits)


MFA students must register for THTR 697 in the Fall and Spring of their 3rd year and complete a terminal project. Designing a mainstage production with extensive research, preparation, and paperwork will be the culmination of students’ time at Purdue and serve as the basis for their Terminal Project.

Electives (3 credits)


Students should choose one course for an elective. Must be 300-level or above in Art, Design, etc.

GPA Requirements


Only 6 credit hours of courses below the 500 level, and within the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, can be counted toward the 60 credit hour minimum.
