Program Requirements

60 Credits Required

Required Courses (60 credits)

Core Courses (30 credits)

Students should take all six courses of the variable titles under THTR 555.

Specialization Courses (21 credits)

The courses listed are suggestions only. Any courses related to Theatre Technology which support the needs of the student are possibilities depending on availability and approval of the graduate committee.

Tutorial Internship (3 credits)

Students must register for THTR 669 for a Tutorial Internship in the Fall of their 3rd year.

Terminal Project Course (6 credits)

MFA students must register for THTR 697 in the Fall and Spring of their 3rd year and complete a terminal project. The culmination of students’ time at Purdue will come in the form of technical direction for a production with a extensive and complex scenic elements. This work will form the basis for their Terminal Project or Thesis.

GPA Requirements

Only 6 credit hours of courses below the 500 level, and within the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, can be counted toward the 60 credit hour minimum. The Graduate School defines “Department” as “Visual and Performing Arts,” not “Division of Theatre.” A case can be made for lower-level courses from other areas of the University, such as Engineering, Apparel Technology, or the Business School. The Graduate School accepts the argument that a theatre person might need a course in, for example, accounting, but would not be prepared or allowed to take a graduate-level accounting course.
