About the Program
Students typically-though not exclusively-seek a Master’s Degree in English Education in order to enhance their practice as secondary English teachers and/or to enter the PhD pipeline in order to expand future career pathways. Though a Master’s degree from any institution might serve the purpose of boosting salaries for teachers working in districts that (still) provide incentives for advanced degrees, a degree from Purdue conveys a level of integrity and rigor that both students and employers find meaningful and valuable. Choose one from each list. Literacy and Language English Electives (9 credits)
English Education students are required to take 9 credits of coursework focused on English education or related topics of study. Students typically draw from graduate courses offered by Language & Literacy faculty (EDCI courses at the 500 or 600 level) or seminars of interest in the English Department (ENGL courses at the 500 or 600 level). Students can also take undergraduate English methods courses at the graduate level by completing extra projects that are grad-level-worthy and/or serving as a TA for the course for course credit if they have teaching experience. These classes are selected in consultation with the major professor. Electives (0-6 credits)
Students should choose electives in consultation with their advisor. Students normally use their 6 credits of electives for thesis writing (EDCI 69800). Thesis Research (3-6 credits)
At least 3 credits of thesis research (EDCI 69800) are required. Most students complete 6 credits to also fulfill their elective requirement. Education Licensure Disclaimer - GR
