About the Program
Beginning Ph. D. students in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Social Studies Education can demonstrate the competencies through previous coursework in conjunction with an oral interview with social studies education faculty about that coursework. Among the courses that could demonstrate competency include those in: - History of Social Studies Education
- Theories of Social Studies Education
- Quantitative & Qualitative Research Methods
- Multicultural Education
- Social Foundations of Education
- International Education

Students should take one course from 500/600-level Curriculum and Instruction courses. Social Studies Electives (9-12 credits)
Students should take 500/600-level courses in relevant social studies content areas such as history, political science, and economics. Cognate Area Electives (9-12 credits)
Students will take a minimum of three 500/600-level courses in a single self-selected cognate area. Cognate area selection should be discussed with the student’s major professor and advisory committee. Examples include: learning design and technology; English learners; multicultural education; global education; gifted, creative, and talented education; and educational psychology. Research Courses (15 credits)
Including the courses listed below, students should take 6 credits of advanced research methods courses in either qualitative or quantitative research methods. Dissertation Research (xx credits)
