About the Program

Purdue’s Sustainabilty Engineering and Environmental Engineering (SEE) offers a thesis and non-thesis MS (MSEEE), a PhD (doctoral), and combined degrees in Environmental and Ecological Engineering. SEE’s multidisciplinary faculty train graduates to approach problems holistically, considering the entire life cycle of a product/process, as well as the broader environmental and ecological contexts. This scope includes assessing the social, political, cultural, and economic restrictions that influence the real-world feasibility of implementing environmental solutions.

Program Requirements

30 Credits Required

Required Courses (9 credits)

Because students in the program have a wide variety of academic, research, and career interests, there are no specified course requirements, other than completion of 9 credits of 500/600-level EEE graduate courses. Research credits cannot count toward the 9 credits.

Electives (9-21 credits)

Seminar (0 credits)

MS thesis and PhD students are required to take EEE 69000 every semester until they graduate. This rule also applies to those who have passed prelims.

Thesis Research (12 credits)

Only required for MS thesis students.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • Apply mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, ecology, earth science, and sustainability principles to design a system to meet desired needs.
  • Design and conduct experiments, analyze data, and use modern engineering tools.
  • Formulate, evaluate, and select engineering strategies that incorporate risk to manage uncertainty and ensure reliability.
  • Design engineering solutions that protect public health and the environment while considering the global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with stakeholders and within multidisciplinary teams.

GPA Requirements

The cumulative GPA must be 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or greater to graduate. Within the minimum 30 credit hours for the MS degree, 0 to 6 credit hours of independent project coursework can be applied, as well as 0 to 6 credit hours of coursework at the 300/400 level. Independent project coursework generally is completed under the supervision of an SEE-affiliated faculty member under the course number SEE 59800.

Graduate Programs Disclaimer

  • The student is ultimately responsible for knowing and completing all degree requirements. Students should consult with their advisor/department for more information.
  • Not all graduate programs may be actively recruiting students and course modality availability may vary.
  • Please refer to the Explore Graduate Programs website for a list of currently available graduate programs.
  • Transfer credit policy: Credits earned for graduate study at other universities (both domestic and international) may be applied toward an advanced degree. Only credit hours associated with graduate courses for which grades of B- or better were obtained will be eligible for transfer. Any additional conditions under which credit transfers may be made are determined by the various departments.
