About the Minor
The Learning Sciences minor helps students to gain a background in the cognitive and social processes that contribute to effective learning. It considers how to apply this knowledge to the design of learning environments, including formal (classrooms; schools) and informal learning spaces (museums; after school programs; extension programs). Learning sciences draws on understanding of learning and research methods (data sources) in the iterative revision of curriculum, instruction, tasks, computer-based environments, and educational experiences more broadly, with the aim of enhancing the learning process. The learning sciences minor is for those interested in applying theories of learning to design principles, which can augment careers relevant to educational design of learning environments and evaluation of those formal and informal settings.
Sample Signature Areas of Discovery: - Facilitating learner motivation, engagement, and learning across the lifespan, including in informal learning environments (e.g., museums, after school clubs).
- Developing design solutions for supporting high-quality learning and collaborative interactions via curriculum, professional development, and/or technological tools
- Iteratively improve educational materials grounded in user needs and theoretical foundations of how people effectively learn
