Aviation Safety Management, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate

Location(s): West Lafayette, Online

About the Certificate

The Aviation Safety Management Post-Baccalaureate Certificate provides advanced, graduate-level preparation for professionals seeking to design, implement, and lead safety management systems (SMS) within complex aviation and transportation environments. Offered in both residential and fully online formats, this four-course certificate develops analytical, regulatory, and organizational competencies necessary to manage safety in high-risk, safety-critical operations.

The curriculum integrates transportation security, human factors, organizational accident theory, and aviation safety program development. Students examine multimodal transportation security frameworks; analyze human error using established taxonomies and risk models; apply Reason’s Organizational Accident model and High Reliability Organization principles; and develop comprehensive aviation safety programs aligned with regulatory and operational requirements. Emphasis is placed on data collection and analysis, safety performance measurement, risk mitigation, and evidence-based decision-making.

Through applied case studies, research projects, and program design activities, students build the capacity to evaluate safety management programs, identify latent risks, and implement proactive risk controls. Graduates gain expertise in regulatory environments, safety culture development, behavioral-based safety strategies, and the practical administration of airline or fixed-base operator (FBO) safety offices.

This certificate is well suited for aviation professionals, safety officers, military personnel, regulators, and transportation managers seeking specialized credentials in aviation safety leadership. Credits may be applied toward the Master of Science in Aviation and Aerospace Management (MSAAM), subject to university policy.

As global aviation systems grow in complexity and demand, organizations require leaders capable of integrating human factors, risk management, and structured safety governance into resilient operational systems. This certificate prepares professionals to meet that need with analytical rigor and applied expertise.
