About the Program
As a collaborative creation of four new courses across the College of Education and College of Health and Human Sciences, the Telemental Health Counseling graduate certificate is for mental health professionals and graduate students. The practice of telemental health is expanding rapidly, reflecting both increased opportunities afforded by technological advances within the healthcare field, as well as pressing needs to resolve persistent healthcare disparities associated with in-person services. Telemental health provides critical points of access for patients with restricted ability or willingness to travel due to age, disability, limited financial resources, or geographical location. Telemental health can also connect patients with providers who have expertise or competencies important to them, such as shared sociocultural experiences and perspectives. The need for highly skilled telemental health providers has been further accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly given the unknown restrictions that will continue to be placed on in-person healthcare services.
