Sports Studies and Production Certificate

About the Certificate


The Sports Studies and Production Certificate affords students the opportunity to engage in experiential learning through a blend of coursework and video production while also exploring sports from cultural and historic perspectives. 

Requirements for the Certificate (11-12 credits)


A. Sports Studies (3 or 6 credits)


Choose 1 or 2 courses from the following list.

B. Sports Production (3 or 6 credits)


Choose 1 or 2 courses from the following list.

C. Professional Development (2-3 credits)


Students will either complete a minimum of 2 sessions of internship work, with each session focusing on a different sport, or complete a producer/director production course. Each internship sessions requires a minimum of 50 hours of work be to completed within a semester. Students are responsible for securing their own internships. Potential sources of internships include Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics, Hall of Music Productions, ESPN, FOX SPORTS, BTN, Local Professional venues, etc. Contact the Department of  Film and Video for more information on internships and internship credit.

Notes


  • At least 50% of the coursework completed to fulfill the Certificate must be completed at Purdue University.
  • All courses must have a C- or higher.

Program Learning Outcomes


  • Identify core concepts and workflows used in the production process for live sports video.
  • Analyze social, historical, cultural, and/or economic impacts of sport at local, national, and/or global levels.
  • Implement industry-standard technology, techniques, and best practices in cinematography, sound recording, editing, directing, etc., to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams and produce professional-quality sports content under real-world constraints.
  • Critique live and recorded sports productions in terms of production quality, narrative structure, and/or audience engagement outcomes using established industry metrics.

  • P/NP cannot be used to satisfy Liberal Arts Core, Liberal Arts major, minor, or certificate requirements.
