About this Concentration
The Smart Manufacturing concentration for Industrial Engineering Technology (IET) students prepares graduates to lead in digitally connected, data-driven production environments. This concentration integrates cloud computing, manufacturing information systems, industrial control systems, machine learning, and advanced analytics to support modern smart factory operations.
Students develop the technical skills needed to design, implement, and optimize integrated manufacturing systems that connect shop-floor equipment, enterprise systems, and cloud platforms. Through applied learning experiences, students work with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), manufacturing execution systems (MES), enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, cloud infrastructure, and machine learning tools to improve efficiency, quality, flexibility, and decision-making in manufacturing environments.
The curriculum emphasizes horizontal and vertical systems integration, real-time data processing, production analytics, and the deployment of intelligent manufacturing applications. Students also explore nature-inspired design and emerging materials to support innovative product and process development.
This concentration aligns closely with the Industrial Engineering Technology mission by strengthening students’ ability to analyze systems, improve processes, and implement scalable technology solutions across manufacturing enterprises. Graduates are prepared for careers in smart manufacturing engineering, production systems integration, manufacturing analytics, industrial automation, digital transformation, and Industry 4.0 implementation.
