About the Certificate


This certificate combines foundational knowledge in foreign policy, international relations, and diplomacy, with specialized knowledge in emerging technologies and their associated global challenges and opportunities. Students gain an understanding of foreign policy analysis and strategies to assess geopolitical risks associated within areas such as artificial intelligence, energy, biotechnology, and space technology. The certificate coursework helps prepare students for careers in foreign affairs. 

Certificate Requirements (12 credits)


Program Learning Outcomes


  1. Explain the core concepts and principles of tech diplomacy and characterize its history, development, and current applications.
  2. Integrate information from multiple sources to assess the features of emerging technologies that influence relationships among nations and explain the international and foreign policy risks and opportunities associated with them.
  3. Compare and contrast governmental and non-governmental organizations and explain the role these actors play in diplomacy and foreign policymaking.
  4. Explain foundational theories in international relations and foreign policy and describe their implications for current issues in tech diplomacy.  
  5. Demonstrate effective communication skills through organizing, analyzing, and integrating information to create written briefs, reports, and presentations suitable for foreign affairs audiences.
