About the Concentration
The Energy Systems & HVAC Engineering Technology concentration provides focused study in the analysis, design, integration, and performance optimization of building energy and environmental control systems. Grounded in both mechanical and electrical engineering technology, the concentration integrates thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, electrical circuits, instrumentation, and control systems to support the effective management of complex energy infrastructures.
Students develop applied competencies in heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems, building automation, and energy distribution systems. Emphasis is placed on system reliability, operational efficiency, performance evaluation, and the coordination of mechanical and electrical components within integrated building environments.
Through advanced coursework and a two-semester engineering technology capstone sequence, students synthesize interdisciplinary technical principles to design, assess, and improve energy and environmental systems. Consideration of sustainability, regulatory frameworks, safety, and lifecycle performance is incorporated into technical decision-making and system optimization.
Graduates are prepared to assume increasing responsibility in the design, commissioning, integration, and optimization of energy systems across commercial, industrial, and institutional settings. The concentration supports professional roles in advanced HVAC engineering technology, energy systems analysis, facilities and infrastructure systems management, and building automation integration, where system-level coordination and technical leadership are required.
