Communication Concentration for Human Resource Development

Location(s): West Lafayette

About the Concentration

The Communication Concentration enhances the B.S. in Human Resource Development (HRD) by strengthening the advanced communication and consultation skills essential to effective HR practice. HR professionals regularly facilitate learning, coach leaders, manage change initiatives, and navigate sensitive employee conversations. This concentration develops students’ ability to communicate with clarity, credibility, and influence across diverse audiences-capabilities that directly support both operational and strategic HR roles.

Optional for HRD majors, this concentration is distinct from sector-based or technology-focused pathways because it develops a cross-cutting professional competency rather than industry specialization or technical tool proficiency. Its emphasis on interpersonal effectiveness, persuasive communication, stakeholder engagement, and professional presence complements HRD’s people-development foundation without duplicating core coursework.

Graduates are better prepared for roles such as HR generalist, talent development specialist, recruiter, training facilitator, and early-career HR business partner, where effective communication is central to performance and organizational impact.
