Industrial & Organizational Psychology Concentration for Human Resource Development

About the Concentration


The Industrial & Organizational (I-O) Psychology Concentration within the B.S. in Human Resource Development (HRD) provides students with a strong behavioral science foundation for understanding how individuals and groups function in workplace settings. Drawing from core areas of psychology-including cognition, neuroscience, social behavior, and industrial-organizational psychology-this concentration equips students with insight into how people think, learn, decide, and interact at work.

Students examine topics such as motivation, decision-making, team dynamics, attitudes, leadership, performance, and organizational culture. Emphasis is placed on applying research-based psychological principles to real-world HR and talent development challenges. The concentration strengthens students’ ability to analyze workplace behavior, diagnose performance gaps, and design evidence-informed interventions that improve engagement, productivity, and organizational effectiveness.

In an era of increasing AI integration and technology-enabled work, this concentration also prepares students to understand the human factors that shape successful adoption of new systems. Graduates gain a deeper appreciation for trust, fairness, stress, bias, and change management-ensuring they can support responsible, human-centered workforce strategies in complex and evolving organizational environments.
