About the Philosophy Program
The Department of Philosophy offers courses of study leading to the B.A. in Philosophy, B.A. in Artificial Intelligence, and Ph.D. In addition to research specializations from across the field of contemporary analytic philosophy, the department’s faculty also exhibit particular strengths in the history of philosophy, philosophy of mind and cognitive science, as well as in continental European philosophy.
Philosophy graduates are well poised to be successful in a variety of industries, including education, government and law, medicine, technology, writing and editing, management and customer service, and many more. This is due to the valuable skills developed through the study including critical thinking, focused analysis, clear communication in both written and verbal communication, forming positions and providing reasoning for that position, while also being able to consider the strengths and weaknesses of alternative options and proposals, as some examples. It is also known that philosophy graduates who apply to medical school, law school, and other graduate programs have a high acceptance rate and perform better on the GRE, LSAT, and GMAT. USA Today has reported that of those who have gone on to law school, philosophy majors have performed better than students in any other major, which suggests that philosophy may be an ideal background for those intending to attend law school.
