Entomology, PHD

Location(s): West Lafayette

About the Program

Graduate students in Entomology learn and work alongside outstanding faculty in a department that has been a core component of the Purdue College of Agriculture since 1879. Current students benefit from multidisciplinary research opportunities and participation in the university’s teaching and extension missions. Graduates are in demand in academia, the private sector, and government agencies. Students have opportunities for cross-disciplinary training with allied departments, access to Purdue core facilities for state-of-the-art analytical techniques, and participate in active research programs ranging from molecular to ecosystem-level studies involving insects. They gain meaningful experience in all three pillars of the Land Gran mission: learning, discovery, and engagement.

Ongoing areas of research include:

  • Insect ecology and pest-plant interactions
  • Insect biochemistry, physiology and toxicology
  • Insect systematics and evolutionary biology
  • Insect genetics, genomics and molecular biology
  • Integrated pest management and biological control
  • Urban and industrial pest management
  • Vector biology

Program Requirements

90 Credits Required

Required Courses (3-5 credits)

Core Selectives (18-21 credits)

Thesis Research (12 credits)

Electives (52-57)

Taking additional coursework-either in entomology or other departments in the college-above and beyond the curriculum outlined above is perfectly acceptable and, in some cases, encouraged. Additional coursework should be discussed and approved by the student’s advisory committee before submitting a Plan of Study (POS). Graduate students may include up to 6 credits worth of 300/400-level coursework on their POS, in addition to their 500/600-level classes. Courses with similar content taken as part of an earlier degree program cannot be used to fulfill MS or PhD program requirements.

Master’s students are required to take 2 ENTM Core Selective Courses from the list above and may not substitute courses from other departments to fulfill this requirement. PhD students may substitute one of their 3 ENTM Core Selectives from another department without prior approval by the Graduate Committee; however, it must be a 3-4 cr. graduate level course that has been approved by the student’s advisory committee.
