About the Program
The Electrical Engineering Technology (ECET) major prepares students to design, analyze, build, and manage the electronic and electrical systems that power modern society. Electrical Engineering Technology program is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the commission’s general criteria and program criteria for Electrical/Electronic(s) Engineering Technology and similarly named programs.
Electrical and Electronic systems are embedded in nearly every sector-energy, manufacturing, communications, transportation, automation, defense, healthcare, automotive, entertainment, and consumer technology. ECET graduates are prepared to work at the intersection of hardware, software, power, and control, applying hands-on technical expertise to real-world engineering problems.
The ECET curriculum blends applied mathematics and science with extensive laboratory experience and project-based learning. Students progress from foundational circuit analysis and digital systems to advanced applications in embedded systems, wireless communications, power electronics, energy systems, and control systems.
In the first two years, students build strong technical fundamentals through courses in:
- DC and AC electronics
- Digital systems and microcontrollers
- Data acquisition and systems control
- Calculus and physics
- Electronic prototyping and design for manufacturability
As students advance, they engage in higher-level analysis and system integration, including:
- Continuous systems analysis and PID control
- Embedded digital system architecture
- Wireless and RF communications
- Electrical energy systems and smart grid technologies
- Advanced electronics and technical selectives
The senior capstone sequence integrates technical design, project management, professional ethics, and teamwork. Students work in teams to define, design, prototype, test, and present a comprehensive engineering technology solution that meets performance, cost, and societal constraints.
Students in this program can apply to participate in a five-year combined bachelor’s/master’s degree program in electrical engineering technology.

School of Engineering Technology Major Change (CODO) Requirements
Professional Experience
The SOET Professional Experience requirement is intended to document those experiences which help expose SOET students to the expectations of their professional prior to graduation. This may occur through industrial experience, technical or administrative involvement with community service, military service, et cetera. Approval has been granted for the following experiences. Additional experiences may also satisfy this graduation requirement. Requests for approval should be submitted to the SOET Curriculum Subcommittee Chair for consideration, allowing at least four academic weeks for review and response. See supplemental information for approved experiences.
Critical Course
The ♦ course is considered critical.
In alignment with the Degree Map Guidance for Indiana’s Public Colleges and Universities, published by the Commission for Higher Education (pursuant to HEA 1348-2013), a Critical Course is identified as “one that a student must be able to pass to persist and succeed in a particular major. Students who want to be nurses, for example, should know that they are expected to be proficient in courses like biology in order to be successful. These would be identified by the institutions for each degree program.”
Disclaimer
The student is ultimately responsible for knowing and completing all degree requirements. Consultation with an advisor may result in an altered plan customized for an individual student. The myPurduePlan powered by DegreeWorks is the knowledge source for specific requirements and completion.
