Overall - The White Lodging-J.W. Marriott, Jr. School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) & Division of Consumer Science (CSR) has established itself as a global leader and offers graduate students’ opportunities to become expert social scientists or executives in areas that interface psychology, communication, consumption theories, management, economics, and financial planning. Our school continues to lead as we take up the challenges of the 21st century, consistently ranking in the top 10 in the world and recently earning the #1 spot in a longitudinal study in the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education. Our active students benefit from and contribute to our knowledge and experience as we engage together.

The workload to successfully complete a graduate program is intense and immense. Graduate students must balance classes, thesis/dissertation requirements, work responsibilities, and often personal/family responsibilities. It requires motivation and commitment, but it can be done - and the department will provide the resources, support, and encouragement to help you.

There are two essential parts to your graduate career: coursework and research.

Coursework-At the graduate level, coursework will immerse you in issues requiring integration, insight, and critical thinking. While undergraduate education focuses on transmitting knowledge, the goal of graduate education is teaching you how to create knowledge. The focus is not so much on content but on how to present knowledge that can be used to illuminate and create new knowledge. Students will be given guidance by the Program Director, acting as the academic advisor, on what courses can fulfill the degree requirement.

Research-Since graduate education is so special, accomplishing it requires a more one-on-one relationship with a research advisor. Unlike similar programs across the nation, research advisors are not appointed by the faculty but rather a student-initiated and mutually agreed mentor/mentee relationship. We believe this allows students to pursue their research passions, and allow them to specialize in one of many research areas.

MS (online) - - The online master of science degree is a business-focused hospitality degree designed to help managers with HTM industry experience rise to new levels. It is open to domestic students and tailored specifically to HTM managers with five years of professional experience and a minimum of three years of management experience. It provides the executive management, leadership and analytical skills you need to advance your career within the industry. Whether you would like to further your management career in the restaurant industry, work within more complex, full-service hotels, or transfer to the corporate side of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM), our program is known for developing global leaders and will equip you to meet the bigger challenges and opportunities presented.

Concentrations (Areas of Study):

The School’s three research centers in foodservice, lodging, and tourism. As part of a major research university, we are able to offer qualified students access to courses in individual areas of interest including food science, foods and nutrition, consumer affairs, engineering, education, industrial management, community planning, and others.

Avery Foodservice Research Laboratory - This program is designed to conduct research in the areas of facility design, both production and customer service; the development and improvement of foodservice production equipment; and the development of new or improved food products. Center for the Study of Lodging Operations - This research center provides information relating to lodging operations in all venues, including hotels, timeshares, resorts, casinos, cruise ships, assisted living properties, and bed and breakfast operations. Topic areas include human resources management, service quality management, training technologies, the operations of multiuse resort communities, lodging product design, and finance.

Purdue Tourism & Hospitality Research Center - (PT&HRC) provides quality research services to communities, non-profits, and private sector organizations. Primary research services include visitor profiles studies, value-added data analysis, economic impact assessments, analyses of advertising effectiveness, tourism planning and development studies, and advisory services on destination marketing.
